Agencies For The Homeless Receive Computer Gifts To Increase Efficiency |
December 19, 2008
Four agencies that provide support for the homeless in Topeka and Shawnee County were surprised today with a gift of desk-top computers.
Representatives of Breakthrough House, Community Action, Door Step, and the Topeka Rescue Mission each received the gifts during a ceremony at the City of Topeka’s Holliday Building, 620 SE Madison. The computers were purchased through a federal Homeless Management Information System Grant administered by the State of Kansas.
The computers will be used to enter data into the HMIS, a state-wide network that tracks the homeless. HMIS is a computerized data collection application designed to capture client-level information over time regarding the characteristics and service needs of homeless persons. Implementing HMIS enables organizations to more accurately count the number of homeless individuals in their communities, gather adequate information to guide future planning, and meet the needs of the homeless in a more efficient, streamlined manner.
An advantage of such a system is the capability of providing accurate, non-duplicated information regarding homeless individuals.
“The HMIS is a great way to make sure the right services are getting to the right people and there is not duplication in these services,” said Randy Speaker, Deputy City Manager and Housing and Neighborhood Development Director.
