TPAC Bound
George Jones Receives Kennedy Center Honors

Jones, who is slated to perform a Feb. 21 concert at TPAC, is among the honorees on "The 31st Annual Kennedy Center Honors," a two-hour special that aired at 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 30th on CBS.

Caroline Kennedy describes Jones as "a honky-tonkin' boy from East Texas whose tear-stained voice and raw emotion made him the King of Country."

In introducing Jones, the first lady says as a schoolgirl "my friends and I must have put a thousand quarters in the jukebox listening to George Jones belting out 'The Race is On' — over and over and over."

"There's no getting tired of a singer like him," she adds.

Laura Bush says the president also is a Jones fan.

"Most of our lives, and throughout our life together, we have enjoyed this man's music and his very distinctive style," Laura Bush says. "We've heard few sounds more lovely than the voice of George Jones. It's a beautiful gift to the world, and it will always bring back wonderful memories to us all."
